The Colorado Avalanche are the only professional hockey team in the state of Colorado. They were established in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques and were moved to Colorado in 1995 as part of a re-organization of the NHL. They have won the Stanley Cup twice, once in 1996 and once in 2001.
